Hello and Happy New Year - is it okay to say that now? I'm not sure where the cut-off point is. Some people still have their Christmas trees up. We had ours out before New Year. Welcome back to What We've Been Playing! Or as I like to call this particular edition of it: What We Played Over Christmas, because it's been a couple of weeks since we've talked.
Great White Sharks can be quite tough in Old School RuneScape (OSRS), especially if you’re planning on farming them.
Besides their toughness, they’re also the only source of the extremely rare Broken Dragon Hook. This item is required for the best salvaging hook upgrade, but it’s going to require a lot of shark kills to get!
In this guide, we’ll tell you how to easily combat and farm Great White Sharks.
First off, let’s talk about the mechanics and basics of sailing combat here. The first thing is that you’ll want to avoid using any expensive ranged ammo types when fighting at sea. That’s no different when dealing with Great White Sharks.
The reason for that is that there’s a massive penalty to your ranged weapons’ damage while Sailing. You’ll only do about 25% of your full damage, so it would be wasteful to use more expensive ammo.
This somewhat extends to your Cannons as well. Sure, using more expensive cannonballs does increase your Max Hit drastically, as we covered in our guide on how to deal more damage with cannons.
However, if you’re planning to farm the Great White Sharks, you’re better off sticking to Bronze Cannonballs. They are much cheaper than the rarer ones, so you can buy loads for pretty cheap and their damage is serviceable enough!
On the other hand, make sure to get the best possible Keel and Hull upgrades via ship customization. They will raise your ship’s Hit Points and Armour, which will be crucial for surviving against Great White Sharks.
This is important to offset the lower Max Hit potential of using cheaper cannonballs. Slightly longer fights means you need to be tankier!
Similarly, it’s also highly recommended to bring as many Repair Kits as you can. You’ll need them to repair your ship and heal, after all.
Lastly, it’s also highly recommended to have two crewmates with high Privateering assigned to your cannons. Have them handle the cannons so that you’re free to use ranged weapons for some extra DPS, however small.
With those basics laid down, there’s one spot we recommend for killing and farming Great White Sharks easily. It’s southwest of the Lunar Isle, as shown on the map above.
If you have access to Tile Markers, such as by using the RuneLite client, here are the markers for this farming spot. They tell you how to position your boat to farm the Great White Sharks in the area.

Then, just select “Import Ground Markers.”
If you do use the Tile Markers, the most important part is to align your boat with them. Mainly, you want to align the bowsprit to be exactly in the center.
Aligning yourself properly here will allow both of your cannons to fire forward, hitting the sharks without needing to do any tricks! This drastically increases your damage output and makes the farm easier.
What’s more, if you’re positioned like the example above, this also works as a safespot for your character. The sharks can still damage your boat, but not you directly!
This positioning trick should work when fighting Great White Sharks at any spot, not just this farming spot. You just have to align your bowsprit with the center of the shark’s tiles.
By doing this, you can quite easily and safely farm Great White Sharks for hours. You just need to make sure to have plenty of cannonballs and Repair Kits and you’re set!

Varlamore and Fossil Island are two major locations that you can visit relatively early in Old School RuneScape (OSRS).
There are Members-only areas that you can unlock through progressing in the game. That said, it can be hard to figure out which quests you need to do to reach each one!
In this guide, we’ll help you reach both of these areas as easily and quickly as possible.
To get access to Varlamore, you’ll first need to complete the Children of the Sun quest. This is a very simple quest that you can start by talking to Noah or Alina at Varrock Square, shown above.
When talking to them, simply choose “When will the delegation arrive?” to start a cutscene. Once the cutscene ends, you’ll be forced to tail a suspicious guard carrying a strange sack.
After the tailing mission, you’ll need to speak to Sergeant Tobyn at Varrock Square to report what you’ve found… there are bandits pretending to be guards nearby!
Tobyn will then ask you to find the 4 disguised bandits and mark them. They can all be found wandering around Varrock Square, just look for the following telltale signs:
Once you’ve marked them all, return to Sergeant Tobyn and watch the events unfold. Then talk to Sergeant Tobyn one last time in the cell after the interrogation cutscene. Quest completed!
At this point, all that’s left is for you to go south of the eastern gate out of Varrock. You’ll find Regulus Cento, a quetzal keeper, there. Just talk to him and he’ll offer to take you to Varlamore using his quetzal. That’s all there is to it!
Like with Varlamore, you’ll need to complete a quest to unlock access to Fossil Island. In this case, you’ll need to complete the Bone Voyage quest. Start it by talking to Curator Haig Halen at the Varrock Museum about interesting news.
This quest is fairly simple, but it can take a while to complete as it does require you to move around a lot and talk with a lot of NPCs. So, let us give you a quick step-by-step on how to complete it.
First, talk to the Barge Foreman at the Canal Barge north of the Digsite in Varrock.
Go northwest from the barge to reach the Sawmill. Talk to the Sawmill Operator there and tell him you’re here on behalf of the museum archeological team to get the Sawmill Proposal.
Then, visit the Woodcutting Guild in Hosidius. Talk to Berry by the eastern gate if you can’t enter the guild proper. Otherwise, enter the guild and show the Sawmill Proposal to the Sawmill Operator.
Return to the Varrock Sawmill Operator and deliver the Sawmill Agreement to him.
Go to the Barge Foreman again. This time, he’ll ask you to enter the barge itself. Do so whenever you’re ready.
On the barge, talk to the Lead Navigator and confirm you’re here to help with the voyage.
Next, go to the Rusty Anchor Inn at Port Sarim. Talk to Jack Seagull there and ask if he’s ever made any cursed voyages. You’ll get a pair of options, but your character is undecided.
Return to the barge at the Digsite in Varrock again. Enter the barge and talk with the Lead Navigator, where you’ll agree to get both options Jack Seagull mentioned.
Now, visit the Limestone Mine north of the Digsite. Talk to the Odd Old Man there and tell him about the cursed voyage to get the Bone Charm.
Then, go southwest of Varrock Square and talk to the Apothecary there. Select “talk about something else” and then “talk about Bone Voyage.”
Bring 1 Marrentill Potion (unf) and 2 Bottles of Vodka to the Apothecary and he’ll give you the Potion of Sealegs.
Return to the barge at the Digsite and deliver both the charm and potion to the Lead Operator. Select “I’m ready” to depart for Fossil Island whenever you’re ready.
Sadly, the potion made some of the crew pass out. It’s now your duty to steer the ship in their stead to go to Fossil Island. Use the controls on the bottom right to ensure that the yellow arrow is always pointing upwards, to the north.
Manage to complete this minigame successfully and you’ll reach Fossil Island safely, completing the Bone Voyage quest and unlocking access to the island permanently!
From now on, you can go to Fossil Island again by going to the Digsite in Barrock and using the barge. Don’t worry, there won’t be any more questing or minigames at this point!
Nonetheless, there you have it. That’s all you need to do to get to Varlamore and Fossil Island in OSRS as of 2025.

Deep Sea Trawling is a new fishing activity added with the release of the Sailing skill in Old School RuneScape (OSRS).
This activity allows you to capture hordes of fish by trawling. Which, for those not in the know, means using a big net to grab a lot of fish at once! It’s quite a good way to get a lot of fish and Sailing XP.
In this quick guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to get started with this activity.
Let’s kick things off with the basic requirements to do Deep Sea Trawling. There are a few of them, as follows:
Aside from that, we also recommend having a Fathom Stone and a Chum Station on your boat, if you have access to them.
The Fathom Stone can be used to make it easier to find shoals, which are your fishing spots. Meanwhile, the Chum Station allows you to make Fish Offcuts, which you can use as bait.
Additionally, it’s a good idea to fill a Keg with Trawler’s Trust if you’ve unlocked it. It gives you a 5% chance to get extra fish. To unlock it, you’ll need to chart 50 seas.
Aside from that, it also helps to have Fish Crates on your ship. Those can hold a total of 400 fish at a time, which allows you to carry much more fish than just using the Cargo Hold.
While these last few facilities aren’t really mandatory, they do greatly help make trawling more efficient!
Similarly, we recommend having crewmates with high Deckhandiness assigned to your trawling nets. A minimum of 2 Deckhandiness is required, but you would ideally have a crewmate with 4.
It’s also a good idea to have a crewmate with high Helmanship. As part of the process, there’s a point where you need to operate both the trawling net and helm the ship. You’ll need crewmates to handle whichever one you can’t operate.
To start trawling, you must first locate a shoal. They appear as circular moving lines on the water’s surface, similar to a whirlpool of sorts.
Once you spot one, park your boat on top of it. Then, use the boat interface in the bottom right to lower your nets.
Pay attention to any red chat notifications at this point, as it will warn you if your net is too high or too low for the fish you’re trying to catch!
When you’re at the right depth, a blue bar will appear above the shoal. At this point, you just need to wait it out until it’s nearly empty.
Once it’s about to end, though, get ready! The shoal will start to move and you need to follow it with your ship.
A crewmate will need to handle either the trawling nets or helm the ship, depending on what function you’re performing. If you’re helming the ship, crewmates need to handle the nets, and vice versa.
Eventually, the shoal will reach a stopping point. At this point, it’ll stay still and a blue bar will appear above it again. So, you just have to repeat the process of fishing at it by lowering your net and that’s it!
Rinse and repeat the process until you’re satisfied with your haul. Remember to check your trawling net to collect your rewards and put them in a fish crate or your Cargo Hold! The trawling net can hold up to 200 fish at a time.

The Marlin Rank is the highest rank for all Barracuda Trials in Old School RuneScape (OSRS), and the Jubbly Jive is no exception.
This trial is a fairly tricky one, too. The fetid waters and the Jubbly gimmick can make it hard to plan an efficient route, after all. But that’s nothing that can’t be solved!
In this guide, we’ll give you tips and an efficient route to easily clear this trial’s highest rank.
Before we start, we recommend using the RuneLite client. That’s because this client will allow you to use Ground Markers (also known as Tile Markers) to highlight the trial’s route, as we mentioned in our Barracuda Trials guide. It greatly simplifies things!
What’s more, you also no longer need to mark things yourself. Instead, you can find all of the Tile Markers on the official OSRS wiki.
Just click “Copy tile markers” for the route you want on the trial’s page. In our case, we highly recommend the Marlin Rank Alternate route. It’s a more forgiving one that should get you a time of 5m 10s.
Once you’ve copied the markers, you just need to right-click on your minimap in-game and select Import Ground Markers. This will highlight the route you need to take for you, making the trial much easier.
Also, as an aside at this point, make sure to make and install a Wind Catcher on your boat. You’ll need it for the Marlin rank! You should be able to make the Wind Catcher as soon as you get the Wind Mote by beating the Jubbly Jive’s Shark rank.
With that set up, let’s now go over the trial itself.
If you’ve followed our setup instructions in the previous section, the trial itself should be pretty straightforward now. However, we recommend referring to the route map above as well.
This route map gives you more details on some of the tough spots, as well as what route you actually need to follow. Also, for reference, the colors on the map match the same ones used by the tile markers from before.
Just as a refresher, the gimmicks for the Marlin version of the trial are the same as in the lower ranks. The first and most prominent being the fetid waters, which slow down your boat.
At this point, though, you can use the Wind Mote from the Wind Catcher on your boat. This will allow you to just boost through those fetid waters without a speed penalty.
As you can see on the route map above, you’ll need to use this multiple times to save time. Especially on the first lap, which is the one colored green.
Aside from collecting crates, you’ll also need to get frogs from the Barracuda ships along the trial route. You’ll need to throw those at flags to draw a Jubbly to the white flag. You can check this on the top left of the screen.
These flag locations are marked in colored circles on the route map at the start of this section. It also tells you at which point to throw frogs at them in the route with the colored arrows.
With that said, at this point, it’s all about practicing the route. The tile markers and map provided are already optimized for time, so you just need to practice executing it!

The Sailing skill is finally out for Old School RuneScape (OSRS), so we’ve collected a variety of our best tips and tricks to help you take advantage of it!
There are many things to keep track of with this skill, after all. Things like how to use Salvaging, how to boost progression, even what plugins to use!
Fear not, though, as we’ll tell you about all of that and more in this guide.
This is a quick one, but one that we highly recommend if you’re playing via the RuneLite client: make sure to install the Sailing plugin.
You can do so by clicking on the wrench-shaped icon on the top right of your screen. Then, click on the plug-shaped icon and look for “Sailing”.Lastly, just click Install on it.
This plugin covers all of your Sailing needs, making it all a lot simpler and more efficient. It marks spots for Sea Charting, highlights Whirlpools for speed boosts, tells you when to trim your sails, and more!
All in all, this is a great quality-of-life plugin to have if you plan to spend a significant amount of time sailing.
While you’re at it, we also recommend setting up a Watchdog alert for the Crystal Extractor when you get it. It’ll let you know when it’s ready for harvesting, which is easy to ignore usually.
As we covered in our guide on how to build and customize your ship, you can actually upgrade your ship. Just select Customise Boat while talking to any Shipwright at a dock.
The most important thing to remember here is to upgrade your ship’s Core Parts as soon as you can. These define the main stats for your ship, including its Hit Points and Speed!
There are even some secret benefits, too. For example, upgrading your sails will also increase the amount of Sailing XP you get whenever you trim your sails. So, upgrading them early can help speed up leveling slightly.
That aside, you can also place a variety of useful Facilities on your boat. These give you a lot of extra functions, such as allowing you to place a Keg for boosts or a Salvaging Hook so that you can salvage shipwrecks.
To keep things short, just make sure to stay on top of upgrading your ship. It’ll help keep your progression and leveling smooth!
Tying into the previous tip, you can start Salvaging as soon as you reach Level 15 Sailing and install a Salvaging Hook. It allows you to loot shipwrecks out at sea, which is the main AFK leveling method for Sailing.
The short of it is that you go to a shipwreck and stay at it collecting loot until your cargo fills up. Then, return to a dock and use a Salvaging Station to sort through the loot and reveal items. Rinse and repeat!
You can even automate this further later on by having crewmates with a high Deckhandiness stat. Plus, you can also get a Salvaging Station on your ship at Level 42 Sailing to eliminate the need for docks.
But well, that’s just the short of it! If you want all the details, check out our Salvaging AFK training guide.
You can give yourself a +2 Sailing boost as soon as you reach Level 33 Sailing. By that point, you’ll have unlocked the “Tempor Tantrum” Barracuda Trial in The Storm Tempor.
The Barracuda Trials are, to summarize, a time trial. You’ll need to sail your ship around a set route to collect crates and other items. Doing so under the target time will give you some rewards and unlock the next rank.
For our purposes here, you’ll want to complete the first two ranks of the Tempor Tantrum trial. That is the Swordfish and Shark trials. We have a guide on the Barracuda Trials if you need help with that.
Upon beating the Shark rank, you’ll get 2 Whirlpool Surprise beers as a reward. More importantly, you’ll also unlock an infinite supply of Whirlpool Surprises back at the bar in The Pandemonium!
Go to that bar and purchase a total of 25 Whirlpool Surprises. Do not drink any, as you’ll need all 25 soon enough.
Then, go to customize your ship and build a Keg facility on it. Put all 25 Whirlpool Surprises into the Keg and you’re all done!
This will give you a +2 Sailing boost, although this can’t be used to boost all Sailing requirements. Still, it does help.
What’s more, it will give all of your crewmates a minimum of 2 Deckhandiness and 2 Helmsmanship. Not too shabby!
If you ever get separated from your boat, there are a few ways to retrieve it. The easiest and most readily accessible one is to just ask any Shipwright at a dock. Just select Recover Boat while talking to them!
For a gold fee, the Shipwright will have your boat teleported to the dock. This fee does increase if you have a bigger or more damaged boat, however.
Also worth noting is that this will delete all of the cargo in your ship’s cargo hold! Do not use this if you have valuable cargo and can go back to your ship through other means.
That aside, you can also use Boat Bottles or the Summon Boat spell. They do still delete your cargo, but they allow you to summon your boat to any docking point. No need for any Shipwright!

Speaking of teleportation, there’s a nice trick to speed up your leveling when doing Courier Tasks.
Certain Courier Tasks, such as the ones shown above, ask you to go to another port to retrieve cargo and bring it back.
That means, they are intended to be round trips. To compensate for that, these Courier Tasks also give you double the amount of experience. But you can reap that benefit while also removing the need for a round trip.
To do that, first make sure to empty your ship’s cargo hold. Then, teleport to the port where you need to retrieve the cargo and ask the Shipwright there to recover your cargo.
Just like that, you’re already at your destination and cut half of the travel time! Now just load up the cargo and return to the port you came from to complete the task in record time.

If you wish to do all of the Sea Charting tasks in Old School RuneScape (OSRS), you no doubt already know what a tall order it is.
There are 358 Sea Charting tasks in total, spread all over the oceans in the game. Completing them all can be a massive source of Sailing XP! But it would also be a massive time sink without some help.
In this guide, we’ll give you some tips and tools to help make this all much more bearable.
Before we kick things off, there are a few prerequisites that you should have first. Having these from the get-go will speed up your charting progression, which is important as it can take up to 10 hours of total time to complete!
These are the must-have prerequisites if you wish to 100% sea charting:
If you have all of these prerequisites, nothing can stop you from charting all of the seas! So, we recommend getting all of them before you start trying to 100% it.
Next up, there are some external tools that we recommend using to greatly speed up and ease Sea Charting. The first of these is the Sailing plugin for the RuneLite client, which we recommend using.
You can install the Sailing plugin by clicking on the wrench-shaped icon on the top right of your screen. Then, click on the plug-shaped icon and look for “Sailing”. Install that plugin directly from the game.
This plugin has a dedicated Sea Charting category. This will highlight all of the uncharted items near you, making them much easier to spot.
At the same time, it will also make some of the charting types easier. For example, it will tell you the answers to the riddles from Mermaid Guides.
While you’re at it, we also recommend setting up the Watchdog plugin for the Crystal Extractor. Ensuring that you harvest the extractor as you do the Sea Charting will earn you loads of extra XP, about 36000 per hour.
Aside from that, we also highly recommend using the Sailing map on the official OSRS wiki. It shows you the exact location of all 358 Sea Charting tasks.
What’s more, it even allows you to type in your display name. This will track which ones you’ve completed by highlighting them in green, making the entire process infinitely more convenient.
With that said, let’s now talk about how to complete every different Sea Charting task type.
This is the simplest and most basic of all charting tasks. For this one, you just need to find spots marked with the Captain’s Log and click on them to chart them. It’s as simple as that!
This one is pretty similar to the Generic charting tasks. Go to spots marked with the Spyglass icon and use your Spyglass item on them. You’ll get a glimpse of the nearby area and complete the task.
These tasks are marked with the Crowbar icon. Use the Crowbar to pry them open and you’ll get a potion to drink.
We highly recommend not drinking these potions unless you are prepared! They have many side effects, some of which can damage you or make you temporarily lose your ship by teleporting you.
If you do happen to get teleported away from your ship, check out our guide on how to teleport your ship. It’ll help you recover it. However, do note that you’ll lose everything in your cargo hold if that happens!
This task is marked by a duck icon. Click on the Current Duck tool in your inventory when you’re in one of these spots and then follow it until it reaches its destination.
To speed things up a bit, you can see the Current Duck’s final destination on your map. However, you’ll still need to wait for the duck itself to reach the destination! It’s pretty slow, sadly, so maybe use it as a break.
These tasks are marked with a Diving Helmet icon. They all involve you talking with a Mermaid Guide and solving the riddle they present.
As we mentioned before, however, the Sailing plugin for RuneLite will instantly give you the answer. Alternatively, you can just look up the mermaid’s name to find the answer to the riddle. It’s as simple as that!
For this one, you’ll need to talk to any Meaty Aura Logist troll you find out at sea. Offer to collect data for them. They are marked with a Portable Weather Station icon, as shown above.
These trolls will give you the Portable Weather Station and tell you to go use it at a specific spot. Conveniently, this spot appears on your map thanks to the Sailing plugin!
So, you just need to go to the marked spot and use the weather station. Then return to the Meaty Aura Logist and report the weather data to finish the task.
That’s all you need to do to efficiently do all of the Sea Charting in OSRS! Make sure to take breaks as you do all of this, though. There are hundreds of tasks, so it will take you hours to do all of them.

If you’re tired of going back to dock to check your salvage in Old School RuneScape (OSRS), you should aim to get the Salvaging Station Schematic as soon as possible.
This schematic allows you to build your own Salvaging Station, as its name implies! You can place it on your boat as a facility, allowing you to sort through salvage on the go. It’s a huge time saver.
In this quick guide, we’ll tell you where and how to find this useful schematic.
The first step to obtaining the Salvaging Station Schematic starts as soon as you reach The Pandemonium through the “Pandemonium” quest.
Once you get there, you need to stand on the spot shown above. The spot is just a bit to the east of the Pandemonium Cave entrance.
On that spot, dig using a Spade and you’ll receive a small key. It’s as simple as that for this first step!
However, the next step isn’t doable until you reach Level 42 Sailing. If you’re still early on in your Sailing progression, check out our Sailing leveling guide for some help.
When you do reach Level 42 Sailing, you’ll need to head to Chinchompa Island, shown above. It’s just a bit south of Port Piscarilius, for reference.
Once you reach Chinchompa Island, you should see the Lockbox shown above. It’s a pretty tiny island, so we doubt you even needed it marked for you, but oh well!
Anyway, just use the small key you got in The Pandemonium on that lockbox to open it up and you’ll instantly receive the Salvaging Station Schematic.
You can now craft the Salvaging Station and place it on your boat by using the customization feature. That said, you’ll also need the following requirements and materials:
Nonetheless, there you have it. That’s all you need to know to get the Salvaging Station Schematic in OSRS! No more need to go all the way over to a dock to sort through your salvage.

This boat facility generates a Crystal Mote every 60 seconds. Harvesting it is useful, as it gives you a free Wind Mote and 600 Sailing XP. However, it’s pretty easy to forget to check it out every single minute…
Fret not, though, because we’ll help you set up a plugin to remind you when it’s ready for harvest!
For this guide, you’ll need to be using the RuneLite client. This simply doesn’t work without it, as it requires it to install the relevant plugin!
If you already have RuneLite, you’ll need to click on the wrench-shaped icon on the top right of the screen. Then click on the plug-shaped icon and search for the Watchdog (Custom Alerts) plugin. Install that one.
Once that’s done, you’ll need to go into the settings for the Watchdog plugin. It should be on your sidebar, as a bell icon.
Then click on the green plus sign to add a new alert. Select “Game Message” from the drop-down.
Next up, make sure to give the alert the title you want, such as Extractor Alert in this example. Then, enter “Your crystal extractor has harvested a crystal mote!” in the trigger message box. It should look like the example above.
Note that you can also pick the message yourself from chat if it’s still in your log. Just click on the picker and then select the message, as shown above.
Moving on, click on the green plus sign next to Notifications. You can choose anything you want here, as long as you make it something that you’re sure you won’t ignore. It’s up to you, really, but we recommend either Audio or Overlay. They are the most noticeable!
With that, you will now receive the notification you created whenever your Crystal Extractor is ready to harvest. It’s as simple as that.

The addition of the Sailing skill to Old School RuneScape (OSRS) means that there are some new best methods to make more money!
After all, the new skill requires a lot of new resources. These will be in high demand for a while, due to everyone needing them to progress. Of course, this is also a great opportunity to get coins in the Grand Exchange.
In this guide, we’ll quickly go over the best moneymaking methods currently available.
The first method is a pretty easy one that you unlock early on via Sailing. You can start doing this partway through the “Pandemonium” quest, once you reach the Pandemonium Cave.
Aside from that, you’ll also need to reach Level 25 Mining and Level 25 Smithing. Both of these are pretty low levels, so they shouldn’t take long!
The gist of this method is that you will mine Lead Ore from Pandemonium Cave, then smelt it into Lead Bars to sell. Lead Bars are required for a lot of Sailing-related crafting, so they are in high demand currently!
Later on, you can also mine Lead Ore at The Onyx Crest instead. It unlocks at Level 47 Sailing and should be less crowded. Either way, the process remains the same.
For this method, you’ll need to have Level 12 Crafting. Just get as much Flax as possible via farming it or purchasing it, then use a Spinning Wheel to turn it into Linen Yarn.
Then, use the Linen Yarn you get to create Bolts of Linen at a Loom. You can make 1 Bolt of Linen per 2 Linen Yarn.
The logic here is more or less the same as Lead Bars. It’s easy to make and this material is required for many crafting recipes related to Sailing, so it’s in fairly high demand right now!
Yup, time to become a Hemp farmer! For this method, you’ll require Level 37 Farming and at least 3 Hemp Seeds to start with.
Hemp Seeds are fairly rare, but you can get them while defeating most ocean monsters and while Salvaging shipwrecks.
Once you get at least 3 Hemp Seeds, plant them in a Hops Patch. Also, give 6 Flax to a Gardener to have them keep watch for you.
When the plants are grown, you just need to harvest the Hemp! At this point, you can either sell it as is for a straight profit or process it further.
If you choose to process it, you’ll need Level 39 Crafting. Use a Spinning Wheel to turn your Hemp into Hemp Yarn, then turn that into a Bolt of Canvas at a Loom.
This extended processing does take longer, obviously, but you should get better profits than selling the Hemp as is. However, remember to check the in-game market for fluctuating prices to determine the best course for you!
That said, Hemp is required for some later Sails upgrades and the seeds are pretty rare. So, we expect this to remain profitable for some time.
For this one, you’ll need to have Level 66 Woodcutting. At the same time, you’ll need to reach Level 45 Sailing to do the “Troubled Tortugans” quest. This unlocks The Great Conch island for you.
You can find and chop down Camphor Trees on this island to get Camphor Logs. These are required for various Sailing-related crafting recipes, such as for mast and sail upgrades.
At the same time, you can also turn the logs into Camphor Planks at a Sawmill or with the Plank Make spell. These planks are required for medium-high tier Sailing upgrades and Repair Kits.
Due to requiring a decently high Woodcutting level and being needed for a decent amount of upgrades, Camphor Logs and Camphor Planks are in high demand and are pretty profitable! Plus, Woodcutting is fairly easy to do AFK.
This is a Sailing-exclusive activity that doubles as both an AFK moneymaking method and an AFK leveling method. You can start doing it as soon as you get a Salvaging Hook on your ship at Level 15 Sailing or higher.
For this, you just need to find Shipwrecks out at sea and use the Salvaging Hook to… well, salvage them! You’ll get a variety of random loot in the process, as well as some Sailing XP. You can then sort those items at a Salvaging Station, either on your ship or at any dock.
Now, to be honest with you, most of the loot you get is not worth very much. This is especially true at the lower levels of the Sailing skill, when you have more limited options.
However, it becomes more profitable once you get access to Barracuda Shipwrecks (Level 35) and Large Shipwrecks (Level 53). They have some profitable goodies such as the Hemp Seeds we mentioned before, but also Rings, Oysters, Cannonballs, and more.
This method also speeds up later on, as you get an on-board Salvaging Station, more Salvaging Hooks, and Crewmates to automate the process.
This isn’t the most reliable method for pure moneymaking. But it is very low-intensity and is ideal for AFKing while also leveling up your Sailing!
Last but not least, you can make and sell Cannonballs. These got a huge resurgence in demand now, as many types were added and they are necessary for cannons in Sailing combat.
Now, the exact requirements to make Cannonballs vary. The higher the tier, the rarer the materials and the higher your Smithing level will need to be. Of course, higher tiers do also mean more money!
Regardless, here are the basics for each tier in order from most common to rarest:
Note that you make 4 Cannonballs per bar. So, at times, it might be profitable to just buy the bars to save time and then craft them into Cannonballs. However, as always, you’ll have to check the real-time prices yourself as they can fluctuate quite a lot.
That said, we expect Cannonballs to remain in high demand and be profitable for the foreseeable future. They are consumed on use and required for naval combat, after all!

If you’re out there Sailing in Old School RuneScape (OSRS), it’s a good idea to maximize your combat efficiency by doing more damage with cannons.
The cannons are, after all, your main source of damage while out at sea. Sure, you can use ranged weapons and the like, but cannons are the main element of naval combat!
In this guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to optimize your Sailing combat damage.
The first thing you’ll want to do to maximize your combat while sailing is to reach level 50. We have a leveling guide that can help you get there, if you need it.
The main benefit of Level 50 is that you’ll unlock the sloop for purchase from any Shipwright. This ship allows you to have two cannons, one on each side of the ship!
So, once you get the sloop, you’ll want to build a second cannon on your ship as soon as possible. You can do that via the upgrade and customization interface at any Shipwright.
Also, make sure to upgrade your cannons as much as possible. The higher the cannon’s tier is, the more damage it can deal. Aim to have Rune Cannons at Level 80 and Dragon Cannons shortly after reaching Level 92.
The extra cannon isn’t the only benefit to the sloop! Aside from that, you can also have up to 5 NPCs as part of your crew on it, up from the 2 NPCs on a skiff. This is important, as you’ll want to have 2 crewmates designated to man the cannons.
Make sure to get crewmates with the highest Privateering stat possible, as that allows them to use higher tiers of cannons. There are two NPCs that would be your best bet here:
Both of these NPCs have 4 Privateering, which is the highest possible stat. It allows them to man the Rune and Dragon tier of cannons!
A benefit of having your NPCs handle the cannons is that it also frees you from doing so. That means you can use ranged weapons to deal extra damage while in naval combat, for example. It adds up instead of relying on just cannons.
Besides Privateering, it also helps to have an NPC with a focus on Deckhandiness. Those NPCs can use Repair Kits to fix your boat, which can help during combat. However, you can also just manually use Repair Kits yourself, if you wish.
Besides your cannons and crew, you can also boost your cannons’ damage by placing a Keg on your boat. This is a Facility, so you can place it on your sloop the same way as the cannons.
Fill this Keg with the Perildance Bitter ale to increase the max hit of your cannons by +1. You can get this ale from Chartin’ Charles McAtless at Pandemonium Cave.
However, you’ll need to chart 8 seas in the Western Ocean and 5 seas in the Shrouded Ocean first. So, enjoy doing some sailing and exploring to get this one!
While in combat itself, you can also do a bit of a “trick” to make both of your cannons fire at a target. Like the clip above shows, you should sway your boat from side to side so that the cannons take turns firing.
Lastly, we recommend not necessarily using the highest tier of cannonballs for your cannons. As you can see on the chart above, Rune and Dragon cannonballs do the highest max damage.
However, they are also very expensive, so they are generally not worth the cost. We recommend sticking to lower-tier cannonballs, even if you sacrifice some damage by doing so. It’s just more cost-effective overall.

The Gwenith Glide is the final Barracuda Trial you unlock via the Sailing skill in Old School RuneScape (OSRS).
This trial is a bit simpler than the previous ones on paper, but it’s a lot more intense in practice. It requires very careful routing, as well as for you to be on point with steering your boat at all times!
In this guide, we’ll help you clear every rank of this trial.
As we mentioned before, The Gwenith Glide is the last of the Barracuda Trials, and it unlocks at Level 72 Sailing after completing the “Regicide” quest. You can start it near Port Gwenith.
This trial is a bit simpler than the other Barracuda Trials in a way. There isn’t much of a gimmick, with the exception of pairs of colored portals you can go through.
Enter one colored portal and you’ll come out of the other portal of that same color. Using these portals properly will be key for your routing!
Aside from that, you will also need to traverse through narrow pathways surrounded by ice and Resonance Crystals. Touching these hazards will damage and slow you down, so you’ll need to carefully avoid them to make the times for each rank.
For the most part, though, this trial mostly puts your ability to steer the ship properly to the test. Its routing can be relatively easy with the help we’ll give you, so it’s all left up to controlling the ship!
Before we go into the tricks to routing, though, here are the clear time requirements and rewards for each rank:
With all of that said, it’s now time to go over the routing for this trial!
Now, speaking of helping with the routing, we recommend using the RuneLite client thanks to its Ground Markers (aka Tile Markers) feature.
As we mentioned in our guide for all the Barracuda Trials, this allows you to mark where the lost supply crates are. It makes them much easier to spot and also makes it much easier to plan a route.
With that in mind, we recommend using community-collected Tile Markers. To do that, check out the official OSRS wiki. Then, look for the markers for the rank you want and click “Copy tile markers.”
After that, right-click on your minimap in-game and select “Import Ground Markers.” All of the lost supply crates will then be marked for you, as well as colored tiles telling you the route all the way!
That means that you just need to follow the colored route, making sure that you stick to the same color you got at the start of a portal. Do not switch between differently-colored tiles when they intersect. Only switch when emerging out of a portal.
At the same time, make sure to only grab the crates along the current part of the route. Do not go out of your way to grab crates away from the current color route. You’ll get them later in the run.
Aside from that, make sure to grab all Wind Motes you get along your set route. Use them to get a boost of speed as often as possible.
Thanks to these markers, the trial becomes just a matter of you steering the ship properly to avoid hazards. It really simplifies things!
For the Marlin Rank trial, everything we’ve said previously still applies. Use the Tile Markers for the routing to make it easy. However, you’ll also want to refer to the routing image above for extra help.
On top of that, for this rank specifically, we recommend making sure you’ve upgraded your ship via customization as much as possible. Having the best hull, mast, and sails possible will be key for meeting the target time.
Additionally, it might be a good idea not to avoid the Resonance Crystal hazards along the way. Those are the white ice spikes on the route.
Generally speaking, it’s faster to just use a Wind Mote to cross them fast and tank the damage. Just make sure you have some way to heal yourself from the damage, as they can be lethal!
Nonetheless, you should now have all the tools you need to do every rank of The Gwenith Glade trial in OSRS! With the Tile Markers and routes, all that’s left is for you to practice until you ace it.

Sailing’s launch brought a ton of new systems into Old School RuneScape, but if you want a method that lets you kick back while the levels roll in, shipwreck salvaging is the clear winner. You can start at level 15 and ride it all the way to 99 with nothing more than a decent hook, some boat upgrades, and a little patience. Both the early game and the late game lean into the same loop, which makes this one of the most beginner-friendly grinds in the entire skill.
Once you hit level 15, you can build your first salvaging hook. Start with the small shipwrecks just east of Pandemonium.
Sail up to the ship sticking out of the water, operate your hook, then repeat the cycle. At this stage, drop all salvages since cleaning them is slower than moving on. The goal is quick interaction, not squeezing out tiny loot gains.
From level 15 to 42, you’ll sit on these small wrecks. Sail up, click the hook, fill your inventory, then run to a dock to sort items. It’s as simple as AFK skilling gets.
As you level, you’ll unlock new salvaging hooks. Always build the highest tier you can, as higher tiers speed up the cycle and allow you to salvage tougher shipwrecks. Your path looks like this:
Each new tier bumps your XP rates a bit, though the real jump doesn’t hit until the 70s.
At level 30, do the Tempest Tantrum Barracuda Trial. Try to reach at least Shark rank to unlock the barrel stand. This allows you to store Whirlpool Surprise on your boat, providing a reusable +3 Sailing boost. The boost lets you salvage slightly above your level and smooths out the climb.
After the trials, talk to Rum Dashed Ralph. He hands you your first Whirlpool Surprise, and you can buy an infinite supply once you unlock the keg.
Level 42 is the turning point of the grind. Dig between the two trees in Pandemonium to get a Small Key. Take the key to Chinchompa Island to unlock the lost schematics for the Salvaging Station. Build the station on your boat as soon as possible.
With this station, you never need to sail back to the dock again. You can sit in open water, salvage sort items, dump junk directly from your inventory, then salvage again. This single upgrade turns the grind from semi AFK into true AFK.
When you arrive at a shipwreck during your time Sailing AFK, you may find it already used. You’ll know because you will only have an option to examine the shipwreck.
Wrecks have a cooldown that resets one or two minutes after someone uses them. If a wreck is dead sail to the next one. Popular zones are packed with players, but the reset timer is fast enough that there is always something to salvage.
Recent hotfixes increased the cooldown slightly, which makes salvaging even more AFK since you get longer windows to sort drops before the next wreck resets.
Once you reach level 50, you can build a sloop, which supports two salvaging hooks.
Recruit Jobless Jim from Port Sarim to operate the second hook. Crew XP is reduced, but running two hooks is still more efficient than going solo.
At level 55, you unlock the Teleport Focus. This lets you cast Summon Boat, which is a huge convenience perk.
For example, large shipwrecks south of the Great Conch are easy to reach by teleporting to the Kunch and summoning your ship right on top of the spot.
Level 55 also unlocks your second crew slot. Recruit Captain Siad to steer the boat while you and Jim salvage nonstop. With this setup, you barely need to touch your keyboard, making this ideal for your Sailing AFK build.
From the mid-50s onward, the method never changes. Upgrade your boat when new parts unlock, find the closest cluster of shipwreck spawns, park yourself there, and run the loop:
Salvage → Sort → Drop junk → Redeploy the hook → Repeat
The XP rates climb slowly until you unlock mercenary shipwrecks at level 73, but the method stays fully AFK and steady all the way to 99.
Shipwreck salvaging is the perfect Sailing AFK route. It’s simple, consistent, and packed with quality-of-life upgrades that keep the loop smooth from the moment you unlock it. Whether you want a chill grind during work or a laid-back session in the evening, Salvaging delivers steady progress without pulling your attention away from real life.

This guide walks you through Pandemonium: the quest you need to finish before you can start training Sailing in Old School RuneScape. There are no requirements at all. Just head down to Port Sarim and talk to Will and Anne to kick things off.
The quest is mainly a quick introduction to the basics of Sailing. Once you speak to them, you can hold the spacebar to skip back and forth between the dialogue. After a short chat, they drop you onto a small training boat so you can learn the controls.
When you’re on the boat, click Navigate Helm. The helm is where every boat is controlled. You can set sails, trim them to a stop, reverse, or pick up speed. Hit Set Sails and click on the water to choose the direction you want to move.
Your first job is simple. Head south until Will tells you to anchor near a sunken ship. Trim your sails to stop the boat, then click the salvaging hook to see what you can pull up.
You find something, but you barely get a chance to enjoy it before Anne sends you flying overboard. You wash up on Pandemonium with nothing but saltwater in your boots.
When you wash ashore, walk straight into the bar. Talk to Squawking Steve Beanie (the barkeeper) first, then Brass Hand Harry, who is showing off the new Sailing cape.
Steve sends you to a guy named Ribs, who barely says anything before sending you back. After another short exchange, Steve points you toward Junior Jim, who becomes the main quest NPC from here on.
There is a lot of dialogue, so don’t feel bad about skipping it.
Junior Jim teleports you to the shipyard. Use the Gangplank and click the hotspot to build your first storage upgrade. This one is free, so smash through it and return to Jim. He sends you back to Pandemonium and gives you your first real task: head to Port Sarim and bring back cargo.
Board your boat again by going to the Gangplank. This is how you can disembark.
You can’t move until you touch the helm. When you’re ready, set sails and angle northwest.
Once you clear the small island, turn north and ride the wind until you reach Port Sarim. You’ll know you’re close when you see the floating dock markers. Find the gangplank with the flag above it and disembark.
Talk to the Port Master, then grab the cargo from the table covered in gold coins.
Go back to your ship. Before you even think about steering, open your storage and deposit the cargo. The game won’t let you sail with it in your hands.
Follow the same route back to Pandemonium. Trim your sails to stop, open your hold, withdraw the cargo, then step off the boat. If you step off without grabbing the cargo, you will have to redo the past step. The cargo will disappear.
Talk to the Port Master to turn it in. You’ll get a chunk of XP, which bumps you to level two.
Head to Junior Jim again. He shows you the task board where you’ll pick up future Sailing jobs. From there, you return to Steve one last time and meet Old Grog, who swears he’ll hunt down Will and Anne. That sets the stage for future quest chapters.

That wraps up the whole Pandemonium quest. It’s a fast quest, but it does a clean job of explaining the basics and setting up the larger story tied to Sailing. So, now get ready to level up your sailing and become a master of the seas.

Before you dive into The Gauntlet, you should get ready for what’s to come.
If you need a strategy for completing the Gauntlet boss fight, then you’ll want to prepare yourself for battle. You might be parting ways with your OSRS gold to get to where you need to be, but before you go looking for OSRS gold for sale, there are other preparations that you can make. We’ll be checking out the recommended skill levels, getting to the boss, and what to expect from it during the fight itself.
For starters, it isn’t just going to buy OSRS gold then speeding our way to the skill levels we need to be at. A requirement for taking on this challenge is having to finish Song of the Elves, which is the last quest in the Elf quest series.
As for your combat stats, you should make sure that the majority of them are at level 85 or higher. So get your attack, strength, defense, range, magic, and hitpoints up to at least 85. As for your prayer, it’s recommended that you have it up to at least 77. On the subject of prayer, it would be useful to you to have the Augury and Rigour prayers available. There’s also the Piety prayer that’s handy, which you need to have completed both King’s Ransom and Knight Waves Training Grounds. Rather than finding OSRS items for sale, you can get your cooking, fishing, mining, woodcutting, and farming skills high enough to gather resources really quickly.
We now need to get to the location of the fight. To start off with, use the eternal teleport crystal that will take you to Prifddinas. From here, go to the northwest to get to where the Gauntlet Portal is. Alternatively, you can travel to Prifddinas by charter ship, then head to the east and north to reach the portal that you need. There’s a Prifddinas teleport that will take you just south of the portal as well, or you can use a Spirit Tree to travel to the location.
In the fight itself, you’ll find that the boss is located in the middle of the room. This is divided into a 7×7 grid and is next to the room that you start in. The boss is known as the Crystalline Hunllef, which is a level 674 creature that has 600 hit points with it. You will need to beat this boss if you’re going to complete The Gauntlet in its entirety. After you do, you will find yourself in a location where you can claim your reward.
A popular method for completing this task is called the 5:1 technique. This is where you essentially get the boss’ protection prayer to switch so that you can make more of your time with DPS with the aid of tier 3 perfected crystal bow equipped. Use this for the first five attacks before switching to melee and magic. This will prevent the boss from using Protect from Missiles, meaning it is worth pursuing. To ensure that this works, you’ll need a bow and a staff with the attack styles all ready to use.
Another method alongside 5:1 is known as the redemption method. This will help to cut down any tick loss that you get from the boss battle courtesy of the Redemption prayer. To make sure that you can use this method, you need to use the relevant protection prayer to get the attack that is cast, then turn to Redemption prayer as the projectile is in flight. When it’s active, take a quick gulp of your potion then get your prayer ready. Keep in mind also that you’ll need up to eight paddlefish since you can’t rely on Redemption prayer in high-risk situations. When you do find yourself fishing for the raw paddlefish, take vials and get water from the fishing spots. Doing so will save you a few ticks towards the end, meaning that you can complete it faster.
It will be worth your time having enough OSRS GP to help prepare for this run. There are plenty of OSRS items for sale that can be used to good effect, especially when getting those levels up. If you are going to purchase gold, then there’s an element of precaution that you need to be taking.
It isn’t just a case of finding a source that can help you to get cheap OSRS gold. You will want to find the most trusted OSRS gold website as well. Keep an eye on their performance as a site seller, by taking a look at whether or not they offer customer service chat around the clock. This is usually a good indicator of legitimacy.

Here’s what you need to do in order to get your Mining skill up to 99.
If you have been looking for ways to get your Mining skill up to 99 in Runescape, then we have you covered. You’re going to need a great pickaxe and an urn in preparation. These are the Runescape items that you should take with you if you’re going to get the most out of this technique. Skills are great ways to earn Runescape gold and experience, and Mining is up there with the past of them when used in the right way. So here’s how to level up your Mining skill.
When you are in the first 10 levels, you’ll want to start out by mining either tin or copper. This will bag you at 5,000 experiences on an hourly basis. This is your best option at this early stage, and you can do so over at the Burthorpe mine. Alternatively, you can try the mining site to the southeast of Varrock or Lumbridge Swamp. It should only take you less than an hour to reach level 10, just make sure you don’t bother with clay and go for the best ore.
Once at level 11, you can earn 15,000 XP per hour by going with iron ore. Go to the mining sites at south-west Varrock or south-west Lumbridge Swamp. Keep an eye on your stamina at this point, and make sure that you’re not going AFK. This will be detrimental to your experience, as will not use your urn so be sure that you are using it. You are going to see just how beneficial this is even at these early stages.
Go over to the Falador mining site, or the Barbarian Village site to mine coal rocks. You can also go to the southwest Lumbridge Swamp. Here you can expect to get around 25,000 XP per hour. So fill up your urns and head back to get your experience. Rinse and repeat the process and you will be at level 30 in no time.
We’re moving onto other ores now. There are the Karmaja Volcano or south-west Varrock mining sites for this one. Go for mithril ore rocks and you will get around 40,000 experience every hour.
The main ore for this stage is Adamantite. You can find this at south-east Varrock’s mining site, as well as the sites in Rimmingtone and the Anachronia western ruin mine. Luminite is also a good choice here, which you can locate on the Battlefield mining area, as well as the previously mentioned Anachronia mine and the Mining Guild resource dungeon. You can also check out the Dwarven mine for this too. Doing so will get you 45,000 XP per hour.
You are going to need strength at this point as you are getting to where F2P training peaks. Here, runite ore rocks grant you 60,000 experiences every hour. Go to the Mining Guild, the Crandor mining site to the north, the Fight Arena and the southern Crandor site too.
You’ll be able to earn 70,000 XP per hour mining either drakolith or orchalcite. The Mining Guild is where you will want to go, or at the Wilderness mining site to the south-west for orchalchite. For drakolith, you can go to the resource dungeon in the Mining Guild or Al Kharid, as well as the Heroes’ Guild and Karamja mining site.
Going through the next six levels we will be focusing on either phasmatite or necrite. These aren’t amongst the RS3 discontinued items, they are in fact ore rocks that can earn you around 85,000 XP per hour. The latter is found in the Al Kharid mining site resource dungeon or the Uzer mining site, so whichever you want to go to. Otherwise, the phasmatite is in the Abandoned Mine, the Dwarven Mine, and to the south of Port Phasmatys. You can earn up to 85,000 experience per hour by doing this.
Go to Abomination Cave, Jatizso Dungeon or Glacor Cave. Here you’ll be able to mine banite that will offer hourly rates of 110,000 XP. You can do this once you have finished the Ritual of Mahjarrat or Hero’s Welcome quests, as well as completing the Fremennik achievements too.
Finish the Plague’s End quest then go for corrupted ore by the Seren Stones. You could opt for light or dark Animica in the Lletya mining site. The former will net you around 180,000 experiences per hour. Once you’re at around 97, you can go to Alaea Crablets to get the sea salt they drop. Sell it for supplies to get RS3 gold and you’ll be ready to gear up and carry on.
